I am currently at the Ontario School of Art and Design studying painting and drawing. The thing is that, first year allows you to put your foot in every door possible, from sculpture and installation to time based media. I have been given the time and freedom to carve out of wood and sculpt images into reality. These pieces below are a collection of works I have completed since September.
The Converse Runner was carved out of wood for my Form and Structure class with Shirley Yanover.
My Arms & Chair piece was created from finding a seat in a downtown pile of garbage, painting it red and moulding two hands out of alginate. The final product was created to represent a students struggle in everyday life with keeping ourselves alive and maintaining enough income to do what we need to do as artists.
The Large Nickle was also carved out of wood. The image of the beaver was burned into the wood to give it a warmer feel and bring the image of the Canadian national symbol back to its roots.
I have also been doing a lot more drawing with charcoal and learning techniques that allow me to further understand the relationship between positive and negative space.
Thus far, my experience at OCAD has been amazing and I am looking forward to my second semester there starting in January.
