Form & Structure: Installation: “Truisms”
This piece was constructed to incorporate correspondence between the wall and the floor.
Burning lines from Jenny Holzer’s “Truisms” statements into the wood, the main idea of, “Freedom being a luxury not a necessity” was attempted to be portrayed through the use of string, bound copper metals to create the birdcage and rusty nails. The symbolism of the bird and the birdcage represent the stray away from closure and moving into a world of possibility. The problem is that the bird will forever be tied to its cage.
Other lines I used were:
“Expressing anger is necessary”
“A little bit of knowledge can take you a long way”
“Being alone with yourself is increasingly unpopular”
“Change is valuable when the oppressed become tyrants”
“Confusing yourself is a way to stay honest”
“Freedom is a luxury not a necessity”
“It’s better to be naive than jaded”
“Pain can be a very positive thing”
“You must know where you stop and the world begins”
It is about growth, movement, natural up rise and moving forward. This piece can speak to anyone, allowing the audience to move around it, get intimate with it and take what they can with them.
